Education & Mentorship

When it comes to owning sugar gliders I cannot express how important it is to make sure that you are as much educated on them and their care as you can be.  Unfortunately unless you are really good at researching and looking at different sources to be able to decipher and determine what information is and is not accurate this can be a very daunting task, not to mention the time that it takes.  After getting my first pair of gliders (which were a bit of an impulse purchase, you can read the full story on my "About Me" page) I quickly learned about all of the inconsistent information that can be found on gliders, one site will say one thing while the next might say the complete opposite, so how do you know what is accurate and what is not.  With that I chose to research several sites/pages on the same things I was finding inconsistencies on and narrow down which information there was more of, and where that information was coming from and what was there to back it up.   The first thing I always mention in any situation is to make sure that you are doing your own research, don't just take someone's word for it.  Consider what information they provide, but also do your own research and see what you can find before you decide what you feel is accurate.  There is so very much out there to learn about these guys and while there are facts and things that you can read and learn about, it is also important to read and learn through the experience of others as there are still new things that are being learned and coming to light all of the time about the awesome little creatures.

I am very passionate about helping those who are interested in owning gliders or may have gliders and need help and support along their journey in the world of sugar glider ownership.  Most of the time when people jump into sugar glider ownership it is because they saw them at a pet shop, expo, fair, or maybe some other similar event.  They think they are adorable and so they end up getting one or two, often these places do not give you complete or accurate information.  Often they have babies for adoption but there is a chance that the babies are too young to be adopted out and then people end up having to learn how to handfeed them or they end up passing away.  I'm not saying everyone at these places/events are this way as I know there are a few people that go to these events just to provide education and usually have some glider safe supplies for sale, but most of the time that is not the case.

There is a pretty large facebook community for sugar gliders that is packed with so many knowledgeable owners, breeders, rescuers, vendors, and educators.  I will say that many are very up front and blunt when providing the education that they are so passionate about that they tend to come off as rude etc., but I can assure you that their hearts are in the right place.  That being said I know not everyone has such thick skin and need to be provided the education in a different manner.

I am a member of multiple sugar glider groups on facebook and try to help and offer one on one mentorships when I am able to.  I would say that the groups are the best place to go for education and experiences, however even within the groups there are a lot of people who do not know what they are talking about and end up providing inaccurate information as well.  So when doing your research and talking to people make sure that you are asking a lot of questions and testing them on their knowledge as well.  This is also a reason that I started a group of mine own, it is still a work in progress but I have high expectations and hopes for this group in the future.  While this group is a Texas based group, we welcome everyone no matter where you live.  I would love for you to come check out and join the group if you are looking for education and support if you are interested in more of a group setting and would like to be able to ask a question and get the knowledge and opinions of several people vs. just one person, go check out my facebook group: Sugar Gliders All Over Texas.

If you would prefer or would like to have one person that you can go to constantly for all of your questions vs. posting in a group I would be more than happy to that person, that mentor for you.  I very much enjoy doing mentoring and helping others, most of my mentees become friends and even family to me.  I have worked with so many amazing people that I have been able to help with anything from general care information, bonding information, emergent situations, breeding, handfeeding, baby situations... so many things and I absolutely love it!  If you are interested in having me as a mentor you're welcome to click on the chat button to the bottom right of your screen or you're welcome to visit the "Contact Me" page to send me a message.

If you are just starting out on your journey of research into sugar gliders and sugar glider ownership I recommend checking out the websites listed below and read through them.  These are websites that I have found to have accurate information and have helped me so much along my journey in the world of owning and breeding sugar gliders.  I also will be adding a lot of educational information that will be loaded into the file section at Sugar Gliders All Over Texas and would recommend that you go join the group(make sure you answer ALL membership request questions) and read through those files for information as well.
